2015 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello
2015 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello Ripe berry and cherry aromas with hints of spices and cedar. Dried flowers, too. Full-bodied, dense and layered. Fantastic richness and depth. Long, long finish. Best ever. Try after 2022. 97pts Suckling
This is one of the Great Wines from Brunello. When I went to the big Brunello tasting in New York for the 2015 vintage, this is the wine that stole the show. The 2015 with the 2016 vintage for Brunello are two of the greatest ever. Brunello’s are the last wines to be released in Tuscany in a given vintage. 2015 is a phenomenal vintage. The great wine writer James Suckling calls the vintage, “Brunello’s Fairy-Tale Vintage”
He comments- “We admit that it is tempting to say that 2015 is Brunello di Montalcino’s best vintage ever, and it may very well be!” Parker’s WA rated vintage 97pts, the 2nd highest ever.
Roberto Giannelli, owner of the San Filippo calls 2015 a once-in-a-lifetime harvest, noting it was the first he’s seen without a single damaged grape. There is no question that the great Brunello’s from 2015 are a key vintage release!
Brunello are some of the most sought after red wines in the world. If you love the world’s best age-able big reds, Super Tuscans; Bordeaux, Napa Cabs then you will love the finest Brunello. Today I bring you one of the great wines from this great vintage. The 2015 Canalicchio Brunello, got 97pts by Suckling who said it was the finest vintage ever for the wine, also received 97pts by Decanter and 95pts by Parker’s WA, a truly great wine and extremely fairly priced for what’s in the bottle and when compared to other great Brunello’s. I have been offering this wine since the 1995 vintage and it is one of the great all-round Brunello’s. Canalicchio is one of the small cult producers in the zone and one of my favorites owned by Francesco Ripaccioli. Winemaker Primo Pacenti has been making wine in these limestone and clay soils since the 1960’s. The wines have huge extraction and are described as elegant monster. Huge gobs of dark chewy fruit cloaked by toasty oak with superb structure. This wine will blow you away, starting to show, absolute greatness in a bottle!
