2018 GAJA Langhe Gaia & Rey Chardonnay
2018 GAJA Langhe Gaia & Rey, Chardonnay from Piedmont, Italy
Winemakers Notes: The 2018 Gaja Gaia & Rey Chardonnay is a straw yellow color. The aromas cascade onto the palate with depth and richness, plus an inviting sweet note of honey. Bright acidity provides energy and graces the wine with a pleasant balance and immediate drinkability. The fruity notes of white peach follow all the way through a very long finish.
Gaia & Rey is best served with all kinds of cold or warm fish dishes, also with sauces. Ideal also with shellfish, specially lobster and seafood risottos. Additionally, the wine goes well with cold goose or duck liver starters.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: The Gaja 2018 Langhe Gaia & Rey is a beautifully pure Piemontese expression of Chardonnay. It opens to a light gold/straw color with brilliant luminosity. This vintage is delicate but determined, powerful but fragile all at the same time. The bouquet is shy to start off and requires (at this young stage when I tasted the wine) ample time to aerate. Once it unwinds, the wine offers fresh citrus, orchard fruit, toasted almond and spice. Only partial malolactic fermentation is completed, so the wine’s energy and inner nerve is very much intact. Flint and mineral play important supporting roles.
The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. Giovanni Gaja was the great-grandfather of Angelo Gaja, the Winery’s current owner. In 1994, GAJA acquired its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino. This estate produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines- including the single vineyard Sugarille- from vineyard holdings totaling sixty five acres. In 1996 Gaja acquired a second property in Tuscany, Ca’Marcanda, located in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. Since its inception, the Gaja Winery has continuously evolved in ways that have always focused on meticulous care of and attention to the quality of its wines.
