Bual(or Boal in Portuguese) is the name given to several grape varieties in Portugal. Most of which were planted in dramatically increasing volumes during the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.
Another synonym for Bual is Malvasia Fina, as referenced in official Madeira documentation. This name is also used by a few producers on the Portuguese mainland. It is distinct from the Malvasia family of grapes.
Madeira Bual (or Madeira Boal) is a category of fortified wine made under Portugal’s Madeira DOC, specifically from grapes of the Bual/Boal vine variety. Madeira Bual is typically sweeter than Madeira Sercial or Madeira Verdelho, but not quite as intensely sweet as Malmsey.
Boal is the original Portuguese form of a name used for various Portuguese grape varieties, while the English form Bual is generally used just for the variety grown on Madeira.
Cossart Gordon 15 year old Bual was aged in American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system. This comprises of the gentle heating of the wine in the lofts of the lodges in Funchal. Over the years the wine is transferred from the top floors to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. After this gradual ‘estufagem’ the wine underwent racking and fining before the blend was assembled and bottled.
Cossart Gordon 15 year old Bual is fined and does not require decanting. It is a superb accompaniment to dessert dishes, especially fruit, cakes, rich chocolate puddings and cheeses. It has been bottled when ready for drinking and will keep for several months after opening.
