Chateau De Pizay
A thousand years of history. Gosmard, the first Seigneur or Lord of Pizay, had two towers built in 1030 A.D. His descendants lived in the Château until 1916. In 1981, Groupama Rhône Alpes Auvergne took over the destiny of the estate and created the hotel complex.
Today, the estate’s 80 ha (197 acres) of vineyards produce grapes for six different appellations: white Beaujolais, rosé Beaujolais, red Beaujolais, Régnié, Morgon (three cuvées) and Brouilly Château de Saint-Lager, which has been owned by the estate since 1998.
In 2015, the estate became one of the first two hundred French estates to be awarded European High Environmental Value Certification. We have been adhering to organic agriculture directives certified by ECOCERT on a sharecropping (métayage) since 1996.
The Chateau de Pizay is one of the oldest and most famous estates of the Beaujolais region in France. Since the Middle Ages the fine wines of the Château de Pizay have been appreciated by Beaujolais-lovers across the world.
The oldest records date to 1030, when the name Pizay was mentioned for the first time in the charters of the Abbey of Cluny. In 1070, a surrounding wall was erected by the Lords of Pizay. The keep was built in the 14th Century and the classic formal gardens were added in the 18th Century.
While it is still the center of winemaking, the main Chateau is now a luxurious 4 star hotel, with an excellent restaurant. Visitors are able to visit the magnificent old cellars that have hosted many famous banquets. The Chateau and grounds are beautifully maintained including a sculpted topiary garden. A fantastic estate for wine, food and relaxation.
The vineyard, based in Morgon covers 100 acres in the Appellations of Morgon, Regnie, Beaujolais Villages. and Beaujolais. It also produces a delicious Beaujolais Blanc, Beaujolais Rose and Coteaux Bourguignons, all of which are bottled in the distinctive Pizay bottle. The terrain is granite, covered with a light sandy soil, ideal for the Gamay grape. The Morgon includes parcels on the slopes of the famous Cote de Py from which they produce several special cuvees.
Winemaking combines tradition with the use of stainless steel, semi carbonic fermentation and modern temperature control methods to ensure preservation of the fruit and freshness in the wines.HVE The Director and former mayor of Brouilly, Pascal Dufaitre, is dedicated to quality and wine making excellence.
Since 1996 they have maintained 5 hectare of Organic vineyards and in 2015 they achieved level 3 “High Environmental Value” Certification
