2019 Penley Estate ‘Tolmer’ Cabernet Sauvignon
2019 Penley Estate ‘Tolmer’ Cabernet Sauvignon “Aged for 11 months in used French puncheons. Just like its sibling (Phoenix), Tolmer represents excellent value. There are cassis and blackcurrants with baking spices in the mix, and savory. In time the raspy tannins will melt into the medium-bodied palate.” James Halliday 93 Points
A deeper style of Cabernet with aromas of purple olives, violets, dark roasting herbs and blueberries. This has seen some longer maceration, which drives deeper flavor and more emulsified tannins. Long blueberries and blackcurrants. Smooth, ripe-tannin finish. 93pts JS
Winemaker: The Tolmer is a modern expression of Coonawarra cabernet showcasing intense blackcurrants and savory notes of French oak. It’s medium-bodied without being heavy and has a generous core of juicy fruits with well-integrated chalky tannins. The seamless finish rounds off a bright, fragrant wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few more years
There is a famous region in South Eastern Australia that makes some of the greatest Cabernet in the world. We all think of Australia’s great Shiraz coming from this region from places like Barossa and Mclaren Vale, wines like Penfolds’ Grange and Henschke’s Hill of Grace, iconic wines. The appellation I am talking about is Coonawara and it is the only appellation in this famous red wine region where Cabernet is King and dominates the finest vineyards. Imagine a red wine that has the savory elegance and structure of Europe yet the fruit purity, ripeness and concentration of Australia. That is Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Coonawara has made some of the greatest Cabernet’s I have ever tasted, definitely worthy of the cellar with the added bonus of huge concentration and elegance when young. I tasted this Cab over the weekend and it is seriously one of the finest Cabernet I have tasted for the money. The wine is the 2019 Penley Cabernet ‘Tolmer’ and the wine is a wow, hard core real deal Cabernet at $21.99 with free case shipping. I am huge fan of Napa Cab and I love them but I must tell you for this kind of quality from Napa, you are going to pay 3 times the price. Penley came about marriage of winemaking families, penfold and Tolley who’s winemaking history dates back to the 1800’s in this famous region. The Penley winery really got going with the purchasing and planting of Cabernet in Coonawara in 1989 and have developed a reputation for some of the finest Cabernet made in Australia. I urge you to grab a case for the fall. Drink some and lay some down. When you look back at what you paid for them, you are going to be kicking yourself that you did not pick up more.
