2018 Sojourn Cellars Pinot Noir Gap’s Crown Vineyard
2018 Sojourn Cellars Pinot Noir Gap’s Crown Vineyard A gem of a wine, the 2018 Pinot Noir Gap’s Crown Vineyard comes from one of the great sites on the Sonoma Coast and saw a touch of stems (10%) and 50% new French Oak. Tasting like a mix of a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir with its richness and depth and a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir with its elegance and finesse, this brilliant wine is loaded with wild strawberry and darker berry fruits intermixed with lots violets, spice, pine cone and forest floor aromas and flavors. It packs plenty of richness and depth on the palate, has awesome tannins, a stacked mid palate, and no shortage of length on the finish. Don’t miss it!
Sojourn is one of my favorite producers of California Pinot Noir. Their single vineyard wines have reached the pinnacle of Pinot Noir, extremely sought after and very hard to get. Today’s wines absolutely blew me away and greatness often results in more greatness. The wine comes from two of Sonoma Coast’s greatest vineyards. First is ‘Gaps Crown’. The Pinot Noirs from Gaps Crown are exceptional. The vineyard is located in the cool and windy Petaluma Gap, with twenty top Pinot Producers making wine from the vineyard including Sojourn, Patz and Hall and Kosta Browne. The vineyard was recently purchased by stand-out businessman Bill Price who owns Kosta Browne, making it the most expensive Pinot Noir acreage in the USA. Gap’s Crown is a Grand Cru caliber vineyard.
Second is Rodger’s Creek. The Rodgers Creek Vineyard has provided Sojourn, along with Landmark, David Ramey and Hundred Acre with high quality fruit for well over a decade. This ridge-top vineyard exposes the vines to the full force of the afternoon wind coming off the Pacific Ocean through the “gap” and the low fertility soils limit both the size of the canopy and clusters which consistently produces small, frequently seedless intensely flavored berries. The relentless pressure of the mid-day winds in union with the mature vine produce very well-balanced wines, with elegance and sense of place, expressing the “Petaluma Gap” viticulturally area.
Sojourn specializes in artisanal Pinot Noir of the highest order. This wine is hard core cool climate Pinot Noir of the absolute highest order. Production is minute with only 10 cases each of the wine available. We grabbed them all for you. Sojourn has earned the highest aggregate rating for California Pinot Noir on CellarTracker that any other producer which is Huuuuuge! The #2 finisher was Kosta Browne. Wines are made by Eric Bradley formerly of Arrowood who is recognized as an absolute master with Pinot Noir. This wine will blow your mind as it has done mine. 2018 is a key vintage and the price is not probative. Again the best Cali Pinot I have tasted this year.
