2018 Ramey Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard
2018 Ramey Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard; Sonoma County, California
Vintage Notes; This Chardonnay is exclusive to Ramey; you will not find Woolsey Rd Vineyard anywhere else. Owned by the Martinelli family, the vineyard was planted specifically for us at their invitation. We were able to provide them with old Wente cuttings from Hyde Vineyard. The 2018 season was exemplary. The climate at Woolsey Road Vineyard is moderately cool and the soil vigor low, which coupled with the Wente selection results in a fine balance between richness and minerality.
One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn’t like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
David Ramey is among a distinguished group of pioneering American vintners who revolutionized modern-day winemaking and elevated California to the forefront of the international wine community. Hailed as “Professor Chardonnay” by Wine Spectator, David’s groundbreaking work with indigenous yeasts, sur lies aging and malolactic and barrel fermentation yielded a new California Chardonnay style that was richer, more lush and silky smooth.
