2018 Piancornello Brunello
2018 Piancornello Brunello Intense ruby red with a garnet hue. The nose opens to notes of red and black berries, spices and herbs. The palate is full-bodied and fruit driven with consistent and perfectly balanced tannins followed by balsamic notes and a long, harmonious finish. Winemaker
I like the intensity here of dark plums, oyster shells, tar, dried flowers and chocolate. Rich and flavorful with a full body and muscular tannins, sturdy, but not at all heavy. Try in 2025.
One of my favorite times of year in the wine world is the release of this years Brunello Vintage and 2018 is a buy! The wines have exceeded all expectations. This is a vintage that is packed with tension, great depth of flavor and bouquet. Vinatges like this are seen less and less with the warming climate, which makes them all the more desirable. The wines have fantastic energy and elegance with plenty of acidity. Winemakers are comparing it to 2008 and 2013 that with time in the cellar matured into a stunning year that aficionados just can’t get enough of these days. Francesco Ripaccioli of Canalicchio di Sopra said, “I will certainly be cellaring many bottles of 2018 myself,”.
The first wine we are offering from the vintage is one of my favorites, the 2018 Paincornello Brunello. The wine is extremely fairly priced for great quality they produce. Owned by the Pieri family since 1950, the 4th generation is now in charge. Winemaker is son Claudio. They started out selling grapes to some of the finest Brunello producers. They have excellent terroir just South of Montalcino. They are a part of the Cru zone of Sesta, nestled on a plateau between Sant’ Angelo in Colle and Castenuovo dell’Abate, facing Val d’Orcia. They started making their own wines in 1990 and their wines have just got better and better, now getting huge press, reaching the top tier of wines made in Brunello. The inferior 2017 got 94+pts Parker. The 2013 which this vintage is being compared to received 96pts by Vinous which was the highest rated wine from the vintage at the price. Put this wine in your cellar and enjoy!
