2017 Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard from Carneros, California
Winemaker notes; Since the winery’s inception in 1991, they have crafted a vineyard designate wine to capture the depth and elegance offered by this esteemed site. The deep ruby red color and bright notes of rose tea, spiced cherry, and earth aromas has all the hallmarks of a classic vintage from this vineyard. Fine-grained tannins provide a silky mouthfeel, while flavors of boysenberry, cocoa, and dried herbs add complexity to the refreshing acidity that supports the finish that is clean and long.
RPRobert Parker’s Wine Advocate; Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2017 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard sings of ripe cranberries, kirsch and black raspberries with hints of rhubarb, underbrush, spice cake and fragrant soil. Medium to full-bodied, it has a wonderfully soft texture and tons of bold red berry layers, extending to a long, compelling finish with a touch of minerality.
As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
