Caymus Vineyards
Chuck Wagner and his late parents, Lorna and Charlie, started Caymus Vineyards in 1972. They were a family of farmers with roots in Napa Valley dating back to the 1850s. Today, the family’s two Cabernet Sauvignons – Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection – are among the region’s most celebrated wines.
Chuck now works alongside two of his children, Charlie and Jenny, and the family produces diverse wines from Napa Valley, other parts of California and beyond. Continually pursuing new ideas, they feel extremely fortunate to spend their days farming grapes and making wine.
Starting out with a humble plan and uncharted future, Chuck Wagner and his parents, Charlie and Lorna, founded Caymus Vineyards in 1972. They were a family of farmers with deep roots in the Napa Valley – in 1857, Chuck’s great-great grandfather captained a wagon train to California from Bible Grove, Missouri. The mother-father-son trio spent many wonderful years working side-by-side, establishing the family’s work ethic, appetite for innovation, down-to-earth sensibility, and deep appreciation of enjoying good food and wine with family and friends.
Today, Caymus Cabernet is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated wines. Made from grapes farmed in 8 of Napa Valley’s 16 appellations, the wine has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe tannins – as approachable in youth as it is in maturity. Chuck Wagner continues to make two world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignons, Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection. Special Selection is the only wine in the world to be honored twice as Wine Spectator magazine’s “Wine of the Year.”
Several years ago, Chuck introduced Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif from Suisun Valley, a largely undiscovered and remarkable wine region only 30 minutes southeast of Napa. “Durif” is synonymous with Petite Sirah, and Chuck added “Grand” to the name because this wine is anything but petite – it is dark, luxurious, soft and supple.
