2016 Carpineto Brunello Di Montalcino Earthy aromas recalling underbrush, leather and eucalyptus lead the nose. The straightforward, already accessible palate is on the lighter side of medium bodied, suggesting juicy sour cherry, orange zest and star anise alongside dusty, rather drying tannins.
At 300 meters above sea level, on the road that leads from Greve in Chianti to the eastern side of the Chianti Classico, is the historic headquarters of Carpineto. The company is based in Dudda, in a place known for centuries as Carpineto. The name Carpineto derives from the Greek “karpòs” which means fruit, precisely because this area was known, since ancient times, for the production of excellent grapes.
The company logo contains the history of Carpineto: the lower part of the ridge represents the Abbey of Montescalari, from which it was purchased in ’67, the wine market and the colors of the red berried grapes are represented at the top left. and white. Finally, the right side depicts the olive branch reminiscent of the extra virgin olive oil that Carpineto has always produced.
Today the estate houses the administrative and wine headquarters of Carpineto, with modern – multi-level – carbon-neutral buildings. The estate is surrounded by 8 hectares of Sangiovese and Canaiolo grown in a sustainable way using the principles of precision agriculture. The soils, of sedimentary composition, have a clayey schist structure, locally called galestro, and are found in one of the coolest climates of the entire denomination. The best vineyards are used for the production of the Chianti Classico Riserva and the Gran Selezione
Precisely in the historic cellars of Dudda, in 1982, Carpineto developed the first sparkling wine structure of the Chianti Classico appellation and probably in Tuscany. But it has also been the site of many other experiments such as controlled malolactic fermentations, cold and carbonic macerations. These are just some of the innovative projects that the Carpineto company has always developed – over the years – and which have led to an excellent qualitative development of the product.
