2015 Sandeman Port Late Bottled Vintage
2015 Sandeman Port Late Bottled Vintage; Douro, Portugal
The highest quality wines from the 2015 harvest were carefully selected and blended to create Sandeman’s 2015 Late Bottled Vintage Porto. Aged for around four years, this wine was bottled without filtration, in the accustomed manner for a single harvest wine.
Tasting Notes; A deep ruby colour. This wine has an intense and complex aroma with notes of red and black fruit, forest floor, heather, spices and a slight minerality. On the palate, it has good volume, firm and powerful tannins, an integrated acidity, further notes of red and black fruit and a very harmonious and balanced finish.
Red Port is blended together using a number of grape varieties. The precise identity of these, and the proportion each represents in the final blend, may not be known even to the winemaker. For some growers in the Douro region of Portugal, the ambiguity over what is in their fortified wines is not an attempt to protect some proprietary secret, but rather a matter of reality as they simply don’t know for sure which variety they have growing in their vineyards.
Late Bottled Vintage (also known as LBV) is, like Vintage Port, produced from a single-vintage. The main point differing the two, is that LBV spends much longer in barrel.
Sandeman is a Port producer based in the Vila Nova de Gaia in Porto. It makes a wide variety of Ports, ranging from Ruby and Tawny to a whole host of vintage expressions. The house was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, who started out selling Port and Sherry in London before relocating to Portugal in 1811. Today, the house is run by the seventh-generation George Sandeman, who worked in Porto and Jerez before joining the company in 1977.
