2013 La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Gli Angeli
Winemaker Notes: Ruby red tending to garnet. Dry, warm, velvety, harmonious, steady body and character. An evolved aroma that crumbles into shades of Parma violet and gladiolus, likens the humble fruits of the forest floor. This single-vineyard cru is La Gerla’s flagship wine. Made in select years, this comes entirely from a one-hectare parcel of old vines (25-30 years old) from the original Biondi-Santi site, located between 270 and 320 meters above sea level. This hillside vineyard occupies a privileged position at the estate and consistently offers beautiful and healthy fruit. The wine is aged for 4 years in 50 -100hl Slavonian oak casks and an additional year in bottle before being released.
This gentleman, with his vivacious character, has succeeded in his goal of creating a small cru in Montalcino where the most modern technology is combined with the know-how of local men and one winemaker. At La Gerla, human intervention plays an important role is extracting excellent Tuscan products from the land.
The farmhouse, with the characteristic name “Colombaia” was once the property of the Biondi Santi family. They used it to make one of the best Brunellos in the area. Sergio Rossi purchased the property in 1976 and restructured it with care and attention to detail. Not long afterwards, in 1978, he created the trademark La Gerla.
