2019 Silenus Winery Tyros Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
2019 Silenus Winery Tyros Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Our Tyros Cabernet Sauvignon has a bright ruby red color with beautiful garnet tones reaching the rim. The nose expresses fresh ripe berries and pomegranate with hints of sweet oak. True to its classic Napa style, the palate is dominated by its fruit forward personality with secondary bright and balanced tones of black cherry, pomegranate and toasty oak. The finish is fresh and smooth with slight lingering hints of oak on its finish. Pair with lamb, beef or a well-appointed charcuterie board to enjoy all elements of the wine.
The wine was aged for 22 months in 50% new French oak, 10% new American oak and the rest in neutral barrels. This blend of oak integrates perfectly with the lush fruitiness of the wine and lends just the right amount of tannins for a perfect balance.
This was a great find. This artisanal producer is a pioneer in Napa. This is only the second time we have been able to get an tiny allocation of their wine. All the wine are sold direct from the winery or to top restaurants in New York and Napa. I have been trying to get some of their wine for some time. In 1968 a walnut orchard in the Southwestern corner of Napa Valley, in what is now the AVA of the Oak Knoll District, was converted to Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards by Bruce Newlan, a rocket scientist from San Jose who vacationed in Napa Valley. The roots of Silenus Winery were firmly established. This is the southern end of the Napa Valley where the growing season is longer, providing early bud break and a long, leisurely growing season for optimal, balanced ripeness. Throughout the years the grapes from this vineyard were sold to Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, and Inglenook wineries and consistently ended up in their reserve wines. During the phyloxera outbreak of 1992, Robert Mondavi so loved the grapes from this vineyard that, at his expense, he offered his crew to assess the vineyard and help establish a replanting plan that would include the most appropriate rootstocks for the soils and the best Cabernet Sauvignon clones for the wine. Newlan obtained a winery permit in 1978 and began producing his own award-winning wines. In 2008 the ownership changed and the first vintage of Silenus Wines were introduced. Silenus has some hard core Cab neighbors including Araujo, Fisher and Venge. Winemaker is long time Napa veteran Eiji Daniel Akaboshi, who made for Peju, Green and Red and Medlock Ames.
Silenus’s top cabs sell for $100 to $300 a bottle. What we found out is that Silenus makes another Cab called Tyros that is made from the same grapes and made the same way as their other Cabs but we can offer for $31.99 plus free shipping on a case. In a great vintage like 2019, where quality is spectacular across the board, makes this an incredibly good buy. I tasted the wine last night and could not wait to tell everyone about it. This is a massively strong buy that I completely recommend.
